Deforestation Impact : Loss of Biodiversity

Deforestation Impact : Loss of Biodiversity

Forests are the lungs of the Earth, providing oxygen, maintaining ecosystem balance, and housing diverse flora and fauna. However, our forests are currently under severe threat due to deforestation and the conversion of forest land into plantations. These practices not only damage the environment but also endanger the survival of living beings that depend on forests.

In 2001, Indonesia had 93.8 Mha of primary forest, extending over 50% of its land area. In 2023, it lost 292 kha of primary forest, equivalent to 221 Mt of CO2 emissions.

Why Is This Important?

  • Loss of Biodiversity: Deforestation results in the loss of habitats for many plant and animal species, some of which are endangered. Forests are home to 80% of terrestrial biodiversity.

What We Demand:

  • Deforestation Moratorium: The government must immediately impose a moratorium on all forms of deforestation and the conversion of forest land into plantations.
